Heating
- Switch off equipment – during the summer you may not need all your boilers on, so switch off the unneeded ones and save 5% of water heating costs
- In the colder months customers will feel uncomfortable if your store is overheated. Reducing temperatures by just 1 ºC will cut energy consumption by 8%
Lighting
- Use natural daylight – where daylight is not sufficient for display purposes switch lights on only at the start of trading hours
- Switch display lighting to compact fluorescent lamps which use 75% less energy and generate less heat
Refrigeration equipment
- Don’t over fill – it will make your refrigerator work harder to cool
- By fitting blinds into open-fronted refrigerators you can save up to 30% on running costs
- Switch off non-perishable goods refrigerator cabinets and display lights off over night
Cooling and ventilation
- Lower cooling settings; if you set your air conditioning temperature lower than 24 ºC your heating won’t operate at the same time as the heating – so you won’t pay twice
- Fit timers to fans and pumps, this will ensure they aren’t in use outside of opening times – saving you money
