How do I take a meter reading?

To ensure accurate bills and to keep your account up-to-date you should aim to submit meter reads, ideally every month, but at least every three to four months. Reading your meter is simple; use our easy-to-understand instructions to find out how.

Reading a gas dial meter

  • Each dial turns in the opposite direction from the one before it, so take some time to check the way each turns.
  • Each dial reads from 0-9.
  • Read the dials from left to right, ignoring the dial marked 1/10 as this is only used for testing.
  • When the pointer is between two numbers, always note down the lower number. This is not necessarily the nearest number to the pointer.
  • However, if the number is between 9 and 0, write down 9.
  • If the pointer is directly over a number, record and underline the number.

Reading gas digital meters

Record the numbers left to right, ignoring the number(s) in red, printed zeros, inside a red border or after the decimal point. Below are three examples of typical digital gas meters:

How do I submit a meter reading?

Opus Energy have developed three convenient ways for you to submit meter readings:

 

Online: Use our simple online form
Telephone:   Call 0843 2272377* and talk to one of our Customer Service Agents, they are available to take your meter readings Monday to Friday, 8am – 6pm
Email: Email your meter reading to customerreads@opusenergy.com **

 

**When emailing your meter readings please also include the following information:

  • Customer name
  • Site number (this number can be found on your invoice)
  • Date the meter read was taken
  • Meter serial identification (only essential if you are submitting meter readings for more than one meter)

I am apprehensive about letting Meter Reading Agents into my business – how do I know that they are trustworthy?

Opus Energy works closely with Lowri Beck, an independent meter reading company to take your business meter readings. 

All Lowri Beck’s staff are fully uniformed and photo-identified, each equipped with a Hand Held Terminal for the collection and transfer of data electronically. Taking a meter reading is a very quick activity - it should only take approximately a minute. Making the time to enable the representative to take the meter reading is important, as providing regular meter readings will ensure your invoices are accurate.
